Ques: My urinary tract infection keeps coming back, what should I do?

Ans: A good urologist should be able to help you to find out what is the source of the infection. In females, it may be possible to locate a reservoir of infection like Copper T, Infections of cervix, stone in the kidney, persistent constipation/ diarrhoea/any other tummy upset. In males usually the infection is harboured in the prostate gland or urethra.

Ques: Can I conceive if I have urinary tract Infection (UTI)?

Ans: It is advisable to be free from urine infection before a woman can plan a pregnancy.

Ques: Did I get a urine infection because of using a public toilet?

Ans: It is a myth; one can’t get an infection from a public toilet.

Ques: Am I supposed to drink a lot of water when I have UTI?

Ans: Ordinarily one should drink at least 5-6 glasses of water a day. Any more water is un necessary and can actually increase the symptoms and decrease the efficacy of antibiotic by diluting it.

Ques: How long do I continue antibiotic for my UTI?

Ans: First time UTI in women may require three doses only. However in recurrent UTIs, one may require to take antibiotics for weeks or sometimes months.

Ques: Will Hormone treatment (HRT) help me in controlling UTI?

Ans: In Post menopausal women, local hormone treatment may improve the local defence mechanisms against repeated infections.
