Robotic surgery

Ques: How does a Robot operate?

Ans: Robotic arms are docked to instruments inserted into the body through keyholes in abdomen like laparoscopic instruments. The surgeon sits on a console and views the interior of the body and uses his hand movements to control the robotic instruments which replicate the same movements inside the body

Ques: What are the advantages of Robotic surgery?

Ans: The robotic system ensures accurate and precise movement of instruments leading to very fine surgical work inside the body under magnified vision. This results in less trauma, less blood loss and minimal post operative pain to the patient. The areas usually difficult to access through open or laparoscopic can be easily accessed and operated upon by using the three dimensional vision of the robotic system.

Ques: What are the drawbacks of robotic system?

Ans: The major drawback in the present era is the cost involved in acquiring the system and the cost of disposable instruments used in each surgical procedure. The other drawback is the lack of trained personnel for catering to a large population in India.
